Walking an open pasture with a sketch pad forces you to think about how energy, animals, and water will move across the site five years from today. Poorly placed access roads or miscalculated fence runs create daily friction that eats away at farm viability. Designing our layout on paper before buying materials ensures that every build phase builds logically on the last.

Working with Natural Water Flow

Water dictates where every major farm structure should sit. By placing high-density poly storage tanks at the highest elevation point on the parcel, we can rely on gravity pressure to feed livestock troughs across lower paddocks. This design reduces our dependence on complex electrical pumping systems and lowers overall maintenance costs over time.

Planning Flexible Paddock Layouts

Instead of sinking permanent wooden posts across the entire property during month one, we are opting for modular perimeter fencing paired with moveable polywire. This approach lets us observe how seasons impact specific low spots and forage growth before committing to permanent interior divisions. Flexibility in early design prevents costly rebuilds during our first full grazing season.

Moving from Paper to Field Work

Refining these site plans is an ongoing conversation between our team, local agricultural advisers, and our community of supporters.
